Pristine deep waters 12+ endemic species

Fishing

Juan Fernández lobster, tuna, wahoo and swordfish in waters that have never been overexploited. Sport fishing or traditional — the ocean decides.

The waters of the Juan Fernández Archipelago are a sanctuary for those who love fishing. 674 km from the mainland, far from commercial routes and protected by its Biosphere Reserve status, these waters sustain fish populations that elsewhere in the world exist only in memory.

The Juan Fernández lobster

Jasus frontalis, the Juan Fernández spiny lobster, is considered among the finest in the world. Its firm, delicately flavoured flesh is the result of growing in cold, clean waters and feeding on the rocky seabeds of the archipelago. The fishing season is strictly regulated to ensure resource sustainability, and joining a local fishermen's outing is an experience that connects directly with the culture and identity of the island.

Offshore sport fishing

The deep waters to the west of the island concentrate large pelagic species: yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and marlin (Makaira nigricans). Lure fishing or deep-sea fishing here can yield catches that in other latitudes require far larger vessels and far more complex logistics.

Traditional fishing with the locals

One of the most authentic experiences we offer is joining the San Juan Bautista fishermen on their traditional outings. Using bottom longlines for lobster, handlines for the viejo or artisan fish traps are techniques unchanged for generations, in perfect harmony with the ecosystem. The fishing always ends in the kitchen: lunch is part of the experience.

Regulation and conservation

All fishing in the archipelago is subject to Sernapesca regulations and the internal rules of the Juan Fernández Biosphere Reserve. We operate exclusively within these frameworks, prioritising catch-and-release for pelagic species and strictly observing lobster closures and quotas. Sustainability is not an option: it is the only way to ensure these waters remain what they are.
